What's Blooming Now - May 19, 2009
Mary Welch-Keesey is out for several weeks, so What's Blooming Now will be more of a pictorial review of what's happening with the spring flowering season at the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens until Mary returns to offer he r expect advice.
The tulip season is definitely over for 2009, but the Gardens are greening up beautifully as we transition from late spring into the summer season. There are some lovely flowers already in bloom and gorgeous bedding plants like these hostas.
Look for delicate and exotic columbines - the pinkish/coral ones are in the Sunken Herb Garden and the absolutely gorgeous deep purple/blue columbine can be found in the Asymetry Garden (both of these are located in the Hix Design Gardens section).
The Japanese kerria plant at the end of the O rnamental Allee, as predicted, has bloomed itself into a frenzy! Check out its delicate little yellow blossoms. Also in the Hix Design Gardens, you can find tall and brightly colored bearded iris, both in purple and brilliant yellow - a simply stunning late spring bloomer.
Plus, there's allium in white and purple, and white clematis in the Discovery Garden and reddish/purple clematis on the trellises in the Mist Garden. Don't miss the lovely and willowly flowers of our newest salvia variety just across from the Motion Garden.
Farther on you'll find green everywhere, including the foliage on the birch trees by the spitting frogs, which are in full bloom. The gardeners are just beginning to put in the annuals in the Clowes Water Gardens, but here are irises, pansies, salvia and other flowers all around.
This time of the year is really nice for Gardens visitors with its shady areas and the height of the summer season just beginning to emerge. This mother and child found a relaxing spot to just enjoy a beautiful sunny day.
Come and enjoy!
