What's Blooming Now - April 16, 2009
Mary Welch-Keesey is out for several weeks, so What's Blooming Now will be more of a pictorial review of what's happening with the spring spectacular at the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens until Mary returns to offer her expect advice.
To start at White River Gardens, the tulips on the Belvedere are still strong, and absolutely beautiful with their deep and stunning red coloration. The Knot Garden tulips are also still going and make a lovely contrast to the green of the hedges. The Polly Hix Design Gardens next door feature a bit of this and that, with some tulips and this delicate redbud tree in the Mist Garden. There are lots more redbud trees in bloom in the Virginia Fairbanks Sun Garden - look along the top edge toward White River - and in the Ruth Lilly Shade Garden, which also features some lingering daffodils.
In the meaandering Ornamental Allee, look for brightly colored tulips hugging the red brick walls. The mass tulips beds around the Clowes Water Gardens are still running late, but should be in full blossom soon.
Over on the Zoo side, the grounds are filled with Viburnum in full blooms of tiny white and pink flowers. This bush is near the front of the Indianapolis Zoo Store, but they are all around the Zoo. Not only do they look wonderful, the aroma is intoxicating! Don't be afraid to walk up and take a sniff - you'll be in heaven.
Also all around the Zoo are red quince in bloom. These coral-colored blossoms are from a bush in the Zoo's entry plaza, but there are lots more quince in areas around the Cafe on the Commons. There are even some hyacinths still going, plus daffodils, especially in the Forests Biome.
Come and enjoy!
